Dr. Karen Conn of Bryn Mawr Orthodontics outlines the process of switching orthodontists when rare circumstances necessitate a change in doctors
Sometimes circumstances arise that necessitate a change in orthodontists. Whether you've moved, have a new insurance provider, need different appointment times, or your orthodontist has retired, transferring to a new orthodontist can be a simple process. Here's a breakdown of the steps involved:
When selecting a new orthodontist, consider factors like experience and patient reviews. Look for a gallery of before and after photos on an orthodontist’s website to see examples of their work and artistic ability.
Most orthodontists offer free consultations, so there’s no reason not to go. During this appointment, an orthodontist will take records and create a personalized treatment plan. You can use this one-on-one time to discuss your current treatment, any treatment concerns, your desired outcome, or ask any questions you may have.
If you decide to move forward with a new orthodontist, the new doctor may request some previous orthodontic records.
For patients currently in orthodontic appliances, an AAO Transfer Form will be requested. An AAO Transfer Form is a document used to facilitate the transfer of a patient's orthodontic records from one orthodontist to another during treatment. The AAO Transfer Form contains basic patient information, the current treatment status, treatment plan, and necessary orthodontic records. With digital technology, this process is quick and easy.
Once your new orthodontist has received your records, you can begin your treatment. This may involve adjusting your current appliances, starting a new phase of treatment, or monitoring growth and development of a child before the child is ready for orthodontic treatment.
A patient can switch orthodontists at any time. Whether you're just starting treatment, done with Phase I treatment, being monitored, or midway through a plan, you can make the switch.
By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth transition to a new orthodontist and continue your journey toward a beautiful, healthy smile.
